La Follette is a boutique Sonoma County winery intensely focused on crafting wines that offer benchmark expression of vineyard site and appellation. The vineyards here share a coastal trait: cool, foggy mornings, mild afternoons, and chilly evenings, characteristics that contribute to bright fruit and crisp acidity in the wine. An inviting bouquet of vanilla bean, biscuit, and lemon zest lead to a creamy entry that bursts into citrus and nectarine flavors mid-palate. The structure of the wine builds to a fine tension between minerality and acidity. Elegant and energetic, this North Coast Chardonnay is a harmonious blend of tank and barrel fermentations.

Mader Riesling Alsace Grand Cru 'Rosacker' 2016

This single vineyard Alsace Grand Cru Riesling is widely regarded as a “holy grail” Riesling site. Located in the village of Hunawihr and spanning 64 acres in total, it has been a cherished site for Riesling and Gewürztraminer since the 15th century. Vineyards such as Rosacker are transcendent patches of earth that make any discussion of old vines seem quaint: vines have lived long lives, and been reborn, many times over in places like this. This is a classically styled Alsace Grand Cru, starting out viscous and mouth-coating before a tsunami of refreshing acidity rushes in to cleanse the palate and drive the long, floral finish. Although its acid will surely preserve it for a good 10+ years, it is also a joyous glass of wine right now. It is quintessential Alsace, and at this price, an absolute steal.

Coming from 50 year old vines the fruit was hand harvested and sorted prior to destemming with a cooled pre-fermentation maceration which helped to attain a deep color and intense fruit aromas. Hints of incense and licorice, sappy black raspberry and blueberry flavors smoothly blend richness and vivacity and pick up a spicy nuance as the wine stretches out. Closes smooth, long and appealingly sweet, featuring sneaky tannins and an echo of ripe blue fruit.

Lifted aromas of simmering berry sauce emanate from the glass. In the mouth, there is a cascade of blue and red fruits.
