Retail: $11.95 |Sale: $10.75

Weingut Hugl Wimmer is a family-run winery in Ketzelsdorf-Poysdorf, Austria. Owners Sylvia and Martin Hugl both grew up in family wineries. "Gemischter Satz" has a long history in Austria. It is a field blend where different grape varieties are picked at the same time and vinified together. Thanks to the dynamic efforts of ambitious winegrowers, this traditional rarity has grown in stature and recognition to become the calling card of viticulture in Austria’s capital city. Gemischter Satz is very popular in Vienna’s Heurigen. Historically, Heurigen were simple places, where vineyard owners would open their doors during wine season to serve glasses of this years wine and juices to guests. At most, a plate of cold meats and cheese could be served along with the delicious wine. The regulation for the Wiener Gemischter Satz DAC requires that at least three white quality wine varieties must be planted together in one vineyard that is listed in the Viennese vineyard register as Wiener Gemischter Satz. The highest portion of one grape variety must be no more than 50%; the third highest portion must be at least 10%. Wines without vineyard indication must be dry and without any prominent wood flavour. The wine displays a mix of green-spicy flavors mixed with muscat, white pepper on the palate.

Luis Cañas Rioja Crianza 2017

Origin: Sicilia, Italy
Retail: $35.95 | Sale: $32.35

Located in the town of Villabuena de Alava, south of the province of Álava, Bodegas Luis Cañas is one of the leading wineries in the Rioja Alavesa region. Sheltered from harsh weather extremes by the Sierra Cantabria Mountains to the north, the hillside vineyards are comprised of nutrient-poor chalky clay soil. What the soil lacks in nutrients is compensated for with small plot cultivation with low yields to produce small firm clusters of berries of excellent quality. After its primary fermentation, the wine is placed in barrels where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and is aged for a minimum of 12 months (60% French; 40% American oak; 3 years old). It is further aged in bottle for 12+ months. This wine shows a ruby red color, a clean nose with nuances of balsamic, plum and cedar. The palate is smooth and velvety, complex and structured, with fruit, spice flavors with toasted oak.
