Château d'Auvernier is perched on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel, Switzerland, cultivating 60 hectares of vineyard of light to medium limestone soil. Geologically similar to the French Burgundy terroir, although located a little further south, it benefits from the proximity of the lake, which moderates temperatures, compensating for the higher altitude of around 300 feet above its French cousin.
Founded in 1603, the current owner, Thierry Grosjean represents the 14th generation; his son Henry is taking over. The Caves du Château d’Auvernier owns 26 hectares of vineyards, cultivates 46, and buys 16 additional hectares from neighboring winegrowers. 25-year-old vines grow in very calcareous clays of light structure at 1500 feet of elevation, hand-picked from the end of September to early October. The bunches are de-stemmed, with little or no treading, the grapes pass through a pre-fermentation cold maceration for 3 to 5 days, followed by about 10 days of fermentation. Ruby red color, notes of red fruits and hazelnuts, all in finesse and a beautiful depth, this wine goes perfectly with poultry and red meats. 100% Pinot Noir
