Backsberg “Gravel Road” Chenin Blanc 2025
Origin: South Africa
Retail:$16.95| Sale: $15.26
The Back family business was founded in 1902 by Charles Louis Back – who came to South Africa as a penniless, illiterate, Jewish refugee from Lithuania. From there it was transferred into the hands of Sydney, followed by Michael and his son Simon. In its 108 years, it has been a mixed farming operation – from fruit to grapes and even livestock – but today the focus is on the wine business. Alicia Rechner, Backsberg’s Head Winemaker, first entered the Backsberg cellar doors in 2002 and even after several years at the helm, she notes that each and every harvest is something special. Following the gravel farm roads once travelled by Sydney Back in his antique Volkswagen beetle while tending to his vines, this wine is versatile and bright!

After spending years handling vineyards for some of the more productive companies in the area, owner and winemaker Giuseppe Papadopoli senses that the wine market of Puglia is changing. The family decided to take a new and personal direction with the purchase of the first hectares, marking a turning point and naming the contrada Giustini.
A few steps away from Mar Piccolo, between the sea of Taranto and the heights of the Itria Valley, is located San Giorgio, a small village that is part of the Primitivo di Manduria DOC region. Here, tradition, experience, and passion for wine has been passed down for four generations. This 100% Negroamaro grows on 25 to 30-year-old vines in clay soil, cooled by lagoon breezes and picked by hand.
Tellurian Nero d'Avola 2024
Origin: Australia
Retail: $22.95| Sale: $20.66
Founded in 2002 by Ian Hopkins, Tellurian is a family-owned and organically managed winery located on the ancient Cambrian soils of central Victoria. The Tellurian vineyard sits on the famed red Cambrian earth of Heathcote; mineral-rich soils formed more than 500 million years ago. This rare geology, combined with warm days, cool nights, and long growing season, provides ideal conditions for producing wines with intensity, structure, and remarkable balance. Bright, fresh, and medium-bodied, this Heathcote-grown Nero d’Avola bursts with sour cherry, juicy red fruit, and a hint of spice. Silky tannins and a gentle earthiness round out the finish, making this Southern Italian variety right at home in Central Victoria.

Backsberg Wines from the 2022 vintage onwards have been verified through a structured and detail-orientated process and now bear the specification of carbon neutrality. Efforts to assist in the carbon reduction and neutrality of the brand in its “Fifth Generation” continue and include the offsetting of carbon emissions in conjunction with numerous other projects that support the environment and the community. “The Patriarch” commemorates the legacy of the iconic Sydney Back: an incredible father, grandfather, winemaker, businessman, philanthropist and industry pioneer. Much like Sydney, this wine has real punch, heart and soul, and is only produced in exceptional vintages from the very best vineyard blocks.
